BEER: Barrel-Aged

Updated: Apr 6

Excellence takes time, so it's no surprise these barrel-aged beers top the charts for flavor. Drinking them is an experience meant to be relished. —INGRAIN, Winter 2018

Two words of advice: Slow down. White whales* are meant to be savored, shared, and enjoyed with good company. With that in mind, we want to share some terrific barrel-aged beers with you.

BOURBON COUNTY BRAND STOUT

Goose Island Beer Company

Chicago, IL

The granddad of bourbon barrel–aged beer and one of the original white whales. We’re not going to toot our own horn too loudly (okay, we are), but many consider the Bourbon County series the benchmark for barrel-aged stouts. Our brewers strive to make each variant (Original, Coffee, Proprietor's Blend, Barleywine, Special Releases) the top of their class.

RELEASE Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving; available at a designated Chicago liquor store, at select brewery events, and in limited retail markets in December.

KBS (KENTUCKY BREAKFAST STOUT)

Founders Brewing Company

Grand Rapids, MI

The brewery’s Breakfast Stout (a double stout brewed with coffee, chocolate, and oatmeal) on steroids. By increasing the malt during the brewing process, KBS emerges from the bourbon barrel with the chocolate and coffee presences fighting back and forth for victory in each vintage year. Produced for more than fifteen years.

RELEASE Black Tuesday, the final Tuesday in October; available on the brewery’s website, at the brewery, and through its membership-club programs.

BLACK TUESDAY

The Bruery

Placentia, CA

A thick, boozy beast of a stout from a high-class brewery deserving of its tenth anniversary celebration this year. Clocking in with an ABV around 19% or higher, this Imperial Stout delivers a punch of alcohol aroma with all the bourbon nuances of a lower alcohol beer and a big malt backbone. Split this doozy with a friend or two.

RELEASE Black Tuesday, the final Tuesday in October; available on the brewery’s website, at the brewery, and through its membership-club programs.

*A "white whale" is a cult or ultra-limited beer that is coveted by beer fans and available in very limited quantities.
